Future of Temple Israel Looking
Update: 01/28/09 - NewsOn6 has an update on the building and it doesn't sound good.
"...investigators visited the scene Wednesday and determined the building has no internal structural components in tact or reliable enough to prevent a collapse of the exterior walls."
Update: 01/27/09 - On 01/27/09 at 3am, the former Temple building caught fire. It's suspected that some homeless started a fire to keep warm during the ice storm last night, and it got out of control. Firefighters at the scene say that it's too dangerous to enter the building. No one is believed to be hurt.

My heart goes out to the developer who was attempting to restore this building and to all the Tulsans who were looking forward to seeing it finally happen.

According to this NewsOn6.com article, the long vacated "Temple Israel" building is to be restored and turned into a community arts center. Sitting on the corner of 14th and Cheyenne since 1910, Tulsa's first synagogue has been abandoned for years. It's the last of the early synagogues left standing in Tulsa. The new owner, Kevin Stephens, has hopes of having the building placed on the National Historic Registry and using it's auditorium for dance, theater and visual arts performances. This project could really bring new life to this neighborhood and rescue a decaying Tulsa landmark from demolition. Win/Win.

That's really good to hear. I've always loved that building, and so much of this city has been lost that good news like this seems very rare.
This building is burning, even as I write this. News said that homeless people trying to stay warm might have let a fire get out of control. Very sad.
I just read this post about a week ago and was saddened today to see that a major fire broke out in the building overnight. Don't know if it's a total loss. Yet another piece of Tulsa lost.
I love this web site. It's the only link I have to a former life in Tulsa. Some I witnessed and missed and some I wasn't blessed to see. Thank you so much!
Actually, my comment was hurried. What I really want to say is thank you for loving Tulsa, the hard work, the time and effort you have put in this site. So many places I remember seemed a blur over time, till I see them clearly on Lost Tulsa. I picture I only had in my memory till I found this wonderful site. There is no other place to access the visuals of Tulsa in the past other than the Beryl Ford picture collection. I thank you. Really, really thank you.
I'm not furious or anything, but I did notice that you're using my photo without attribution, and that even clicking on the picture leads only to someone else's photos.
It's not a great picture - what you're showing is actually an old edit anyway - but still I'd appreciate it if you'd attribute.
(But I do appreciate the website.)

Sorry, Dan, your attribution was at the bottom of the entry, which links to your Flickr page for the Temple. I should have put it directly under the photo, since all the updates after it burned pushed it much further down. Certainly didn't mean to offend.
