Casa Bonita
21st & Sheridan
Closing Sept. 30, 2005

Update: 10/03/05 According to this KTUL article, they are renaming Casa Bonita to Casa Viva. Everything is to be left the same as it was before, down to the little flags on your table to call for service. It's said that the only change besides the name is that the food will be better. We'll see.

When I heard about Casa Bonita closing this Friday, I figured I'd head over there and take some final shots. Tulsa's Casa Bonita and its sister restaurant, Crystal's Pizza were absolutely fantastic places to go in their day. Both had huge video arcades that I frequented during the golden age of video games (1980-1983). Although I've never been a fan of the food at Casa Bonita (except the sopapillas), I've always loved the atmosphere. It's like a Mexican Disneyland, with enormously high ceilings, faux caves, cliffs, water features and tons of nooks and crannys to discover. I figured they'd let me shoot some pics if I didn't use a flash. However, when I showed up at around 6:30pm, there were about 200 people there in line to eat. They were literally lined up all the way around to the rear of the building. Hmmm...maybe I won't get any new interior shots before they close down. After all, this is a hobby, not a job. Hopefully, someone else will post up some interior shots. Here's my exterior shots, including the mob of people that showed up to eat the night before it closes.

I'll never be able to think about Casa Bonita without hearing Eric Cartman's voice in my head..."Casa Bonita, Casa Bonita! Food and fun in a festive atmosphere, Casa Bonita!" [.wav] from the South Park season 7 episode, Casa Bonita. I do realize they were referring to the Denver Casa Bonita...but hey, there's only two in the world.

Comments:
I had the same thought. I made my way over there today around 1:30 to take a photo. I enjoy your blog! Keep up the good work!

Now I know what you were taking those pics for. I'm sure you're the person I saw taking pictures as I tried to wind my way out of the Casa-mad parking lot that night.

Does anyone know when Casa Viva will be opening?

I went to Casa Viva yesterday (July 8, 2006). The food was great! Just like the Casa Bonita of old (the 70's). The wait staff was enthusiastic and attentive. I am so glad to have it back for my Tulsa visits.

I got there a week too late for the closing of Casa Bonita, but have now made 4 trips from out-of-state to visit the original, and now the new owner of Casa Viva (and original owner of Casa Bonita). The food was great on 11-20, and the staff and management were visable and friendly. It's the old feel, the great original food - and what a great way to remember growing up in Tulsa.
Trivia time - does anyone remember what used to be in that spot?????
Stockton's Grocery Store - who might have memories of that place???

What used to be in the spot that Casa Bonita (Viva) is in now? I seem to recall that it was a department store at one time. As a very young kid (maybe five or six) I remember my family driving to Tulsa from Claremore to go shopping. Our regular stops were Sears at 21st and Yale, the Borden's Cafeteria way out :-) on 41st street and (if my memories of the sixties serve) Shoppers Fair in the building that later became Casa Bonita. Anyone else remember this place?

Does any one know if it went back under? Drove by a few weeks ago, and it was closed :(. Website is also down.

According to Tulsa World food guru Scott Cherry, Casa Viva is no more.....

I drove by yesterday and it was closed. The outside lamps were on. Called their phone number today, it was, "not a working number". What happened? Will it re-open?

The last time I went to Casa Bonita in the late 1980s it was dirty i.e. chewing gum all over the walls etc . . . haven't been back since.

I had started going once a week and then we had the ice storm and the power was out for a couple of weeks in that area. They never re-opened. I don't know what happend does anyone have a clue?

Shoppers Fair was in the middle of the shopping complex. The North end was a grocery store. Earliest brand as I can recall was an IGA. I remember they had a passable toy section, comic books in the magazine rack, and a tube tester (that my Dad would use from time to time.) The IGA also had an old fashioned soda counter at the Northeast coner of the store. This was when Gulf Mart was caty-corner... now a direct TV call center. There was an old candy store in the area that is now Casa's movie theater. Could get a pretty good load of sweets for $1. They also had the latest radio station hit lists. The Borden's Cafeteria at the south end of the shopping center closed then became Crystal's Pizza. Crytal's was also part of the Casa Bontia family in the early days.
Good times.... -Ed-
