What site that covers empty buildings in Tulsa would be complete without the obligatory Camelot entry. Built in 1965 at Peoria and I-44, the Camelot Inn (later Camelot Hotel then Camelot Parkside Hotel) quickly became the "place to be". However, during the 80s, it suffered a swift decline and was abandoned. In 1996, it was condemned for public habitation, although not for structural integrity. The future of this massive "castle" is uncertain.
There is a fantastic GTR article that goes into much more detail of the rise and fall of one of Tulsa's former world-class hotels. Also, you can view recent pictures of the interior of the Camelot on Abandoned Tulsa. This is a site similar to this one. It's tracking the making of a documentary of historically significant Tulsa buildings that are abandoned and demolished.

I love the subject of your site but I found it difficult to navigate - that's probably my own fault. Another place that will soon be gone is the Sheridan Village shopping center at Admiral & Sheridan. It's practically vacant now. Back in the 60s it was a very popular place to shop. It had a JC Penney's, TG&Y, Rexall Drug, Grocery store, Hallmark store, Borden's Cafeteria, Merle Norman, etc. The Rexall had a soda fountain, the TG&Y had a candy counter including hot peanuts. The JC Penney's had a fabric department that was second to none; at that time most people made a lot of their clothes. The Hallmark store started out in a tiny little alcove and later moved to one of the store spaces out front. There was also an Otasco next door to the center that was very popular. What a wonderful place it used to be.
The Camelot has been a curiousity of mine since I was a kid. I would crane my neck every time we drove by. To be honest, I still do.
I wonder why someone couldn't make a go of it there?

Had my high school after prom there.
GO HALE RANGERS C/O 88
Lots of drugs and alcohol there during that time.

First poster: There are STILL some employees that work for JCPenney that worked at the Sheridan Village store. Most of the moved to Eastland after Sheridan village - and now, they all work at Promenade. Just off the top of my head, I think there are 3 that still work in Tulsa.
I grew up near 53rd and Peoria and would try to sneak into the pools at the Camelot and Trade Winds where the KAKC studio was located at the time. My Grandparents would sometimes take us to eat Breakfast there after church. The place was impressive for young teen. A friend of my parents had a tall mirror with short console table which came from the Camelot.
I wonder if the building could become loft type spaces for mid tulsa area. The top floor tower suite could make a wow loft. become lost

When I was a little girl, I used to love to drive by the hotel. I finally went inside in 1980 when I was in the 9th grade and I went to a Sci-Fi/Dr. Who Convention there. Even then, I remember being unimpressed with the interior, but I was finally in the hotel. I didn't realize it had closed until I was passing through the city in June and saw it all boarded up. made me sad.
I have lived here since 1999 and live not to far from the Camelot would love to own it...... lolunrealistic as it is.... have looked but can't find any pictures of the inside of it.. have talked with a man that helped rebuild it after it was damaged by a tornado i think he said in 83 if you have any idea where i might find some sexysmilingeyes@yahoo.com please let me know
Allison Zarrow, a young photographer with similar interests, was given access to the interior of the Camelot and took some very good shots she included in her recent book, Abandoned Tulsa. The book can be purchased online or at Borders in mid-town. She also posted several of the pics on her website, www.abandonedtulsa.com.
I've always wanted to see the inside of the Camelot hotel... it always looked so beautiful to me...If I were to ever come into a significant amount of money, I would definately buy the camelot
My Senior prom was at the Camelot in 1972. I don't really remember much because it has been so long but there was a band and we were in a hugh ballroom-type area. Nothing fancy but it was cool having our prom there.

Jesse Trisler,
Living in brookside for 3+ years I hated having to see the cammalot go to waste and knowing that there was noting anyone wants to do with it. My Grandmother once went there to get some postcards so she could send them back home to California. I wish in some sad way that they could do wha they are doing to the MAYO hotel downtown just put some new life to it. There must be some hope left for this Iconic struture.
I was told that the Camolot was owned by gays then an arub cult and now there is a lawsut over the former owners. Just wish everyone could find some peace over it.
Well LOVE TULSA SJ

Hale had its 1980 prom there too...what a night to remember! The wooden jawed mayor we have sold Tulsa out on this deal, only to behind the table sell out to her biggest campaign bidder...Quik Trip. In her first year she managed to drive out Bells Amusement park, and gloat how she was the one that will destroy the castle with a gleem in her eye. How can she or any of her cronies even look us Tulsans in the eye.
I must agree with all you that we hate our mayor and councle folks.
We cant even save tulsa and Tulsas history. I feal sorry for all of you out there in Tulsa and the sruonunding communities. What has the world come to. and why must we make things harder on Tulsa and tulsas hard working people. Well Sorry that these things have to happen hopefully one of these days things will get better but that would just be wishfull thinking.

I AM REALLY SAD TO SEE THE HOTEL GO,IT WAS ALREADY CLOSED WHEN I FIRST EYED THE PLACE FROM I-44 NOW I FIND MYSELF LOOOKING IN ITS DIRECTION ON MY WAY TO AND FROM WORK. I CAN SAY IT IS ONE OF THE MOST STUNNING THINGS TULSA HAS LEFT TO OFFER! NO MORE BELLS... I WOULD HAVE LOVED TO GO INSIDE AND HAVE A TOUR, ALTHO NOW IT IS PROBALLY UNSAFE ESPECIALLY AFTER THE FIRE ON TUESDAY! WHAT A SHAME AND A GREAT WASTE OF HISTORY.I WISH SOMEONE COULD TAKE A CHANCE AND FIX IT UP. INSTEAD WE WILL SEE ANOTHER QUICK TRIP I BELIEVE THE CAMELOT HOTEL WILL BE THE QTS 500TH STORE SITE. NOTHING AGAINST QT I LOVE THE COFFEE BUT SURE HATE TO SEE HISTORY GO DOWN CAUSE OF IT! JUST MAKES ME SAD.
I no longer live in Tulsa, or Oklahoma for that matter, but it pains to know that they will be tearing the Camelot Hotel down. I lived there for a while, when I was five, when it was run by the Trancedentalist School of the Maharishi. I never attended their sessions, but I loved that place. I felt like a Princess for living there. My parents did the gardening for a while. I just wish that someone could make it work. I used to dream of buying the place and fixing it up myself. I know it was just a childish dream, but I can't stand to see it go.
I lived in Tulsa as a child in the early to mid 60's. I used to fly kites in the empty field that they built the Camelot on. Our family lived in one of the homes a block west. It was with sadness years later when traveling on I-44 through town that I saw the new hotel built on top of my childhood memories. Many more years passed and I occasionally traveled I-44 and would be reminded of my childhood each time I passed the hotel. This past weekend on my way from Missouri to Oklahoma City to help my 22 year old son move, I saw they had torn down the old hotel. Coming full circle I can say that I have experienced "the before", the birth, the life, the decline and finally the death of the Camelot hotel. 40+ years. Wow.
Yes, it is so sad to see the Camelot go. I wish that I could of had the money to buy and restore it to its orginal look. I spent a night at the Camelot back in 1968' I had a date with a beautiful blonde hair girl who is now a bartender in one of the shops at Utica Square.
But it just so happened that on my stay at the Camelot The Vice President, Spiro T. Agnew was staying there in the Pent House, and they had state Troopers on the roof of the Camelot with high powered rifles for security. And as I took my luggage to my room which was on the top floor the Secret Service men were sure eye balling me, but I did not get to see the Vice President, by chance.
The resturant had the best chopped sirlon and mushroom gravy and can't forget about the big gulf shrimp. Hum Hum.
Now in my living room I have one of the big mirrors that was behind the bar and two of the lamps that dorned the rooms, a book of matches with the Camelot logo, and a flower vase, and a breakfast menu, and a big picture of flower's that may of had dorned the halls of the Camelot, and no none of the items mentioned are for sale.
I will always have fond memories of the Camelot Inn.
I all so took alot of pictures of the Camelot before it was demolished. OH! I almost forgot I have one of the pamplets with pics of the inside and outside during its hay day.
Most Sincerely, Luther Patton Jenks, Oklahoma
